Representing one of the most recognizable classic MOPAR Muscle cars, the 1970 Dodge Challenger was the MOPAR response to the Ford Mustang – a lightweight nimble car with ample power and great looks. Unfortunately, from a sales standpoint, the Challenger was a little late to the race and resulting sales numbers did not stack up against the Mustang. Nevertheless, from a collectability standpoint, lower production numbers for made the average Challenger worth quite a bit more than the average Mustang. In an appeal to the automotive enthusiast, Dodge made just about every engine in their lineup available in the Challenger and some interesting combinations were ordered. They also had some wild colors, that could be had for just $14 extra.

Originally built in Hamtramck, MI, this 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T came equipped with the "N" code, 383 Magnum engine, 727 Torqueflite transmission. Unlike many MOPARS of the day that were ordered with very few options, this car came nicely equipped from the factory with options such as A/C, power front disc brakes, and even power windows. Prior to restoration, the car had just over 70,000 original miles as detailed by an odometer statement, and since the restoration, the Dodge has been driven just over 1,000 additional miles. The car was judged at the Mopar Nationals and received 200 out of a total 220 points, only receiving deductions throughout the car for minor items.

At the time of the restoration, the car was a complete running driving car that still retained its numbers matching 383 Magnum "N" code engine, and 727 transmission. The entire driveline was rebuilt during the restoration and the engine compartment was restored back to the original factory presentation. The motor is a fine specimen that runs very well on pump gas and gets after it when you want it to out on the road. It is far from the cold blooded nature of many big blocks and falls into nice steady idle immediately upon start up. Adding to the easy driving nature of the car is a factory power steering system and power front disc brakes, options that are not found on many factory correct MOPARS, especially the power disc brakes. The suspension and brake system was disassembled and rebuilt from front to rear during the restoration and the car is fun, and easy to cruise.

The R/T has many more creature comforts than found on your standard base Challenger. Inside you will find a factory A/C system, console and bucket seats. Found standard on the R/T, the Rallye instrument cluster containes four large equal sized pods with a 150 mph speedometer, 8,000 rpm tachometer, clock and one pod containing four gauges for oil pressure, alternator, engine temperature and fuel. All of the wood applique has been redone, the carpeting and headliner replaced, but given the low original mileage, much of the original interior, including the seats and the dash, was preserved. Also optional and not often seen is the P31 power window option and the upgraded AM/FM Multiplex radio with rear fader. The interior also showcases the best available steering wheel option at the time, the chic triple polished spoke option.

At the time of the restoration, the entire car was media blasted down to bare metal. She has been refinished in the proper FC7 Plum Crazy color code, one of 8 High Impact colors available from Dodge after late February. Other exterior options include the J54 Sport Hood, drip rail mouldings and factory chrome exhaust tips. The trim is original and has been refurbished and the chrome has been replaced.

For the Dodge enthusiast looking for a nicely packaged, matching numbers R/T, this Plum Crazy car should be pretty tasty.
